For many years now we have been researching alternatives to plastic buttons in an effort to make our products as biodegradable as possible at end of life. One such green alternative is "Corozo", derived from the tagua palm tree which is indigenous to the equatorial rainforests of Central America. It takes 15 years for a tagua palm tree to produce its first Corozo nuts so these plants add value to the rain forest for the local people who therefore protect the forests and do not see the need to slash and burn for grazing or plantations. When ripe, the "mococha" balls in which the nuts grow, naturally fall to the ground without the need for human harvesting. Each tree can yield thousands of buttons each year. Not only therefore do we get a fantastic, sustainable and environmentally friendly product, but indirectly we also help to preserve the ancient ecosystems of the rainforests.
